Summer Smoothie Recipe

Whey protein boosts liver function and enhances metabolism. Throughout the summer I love to drink protein smoothies. I make the process quick & easy by whipping up a big batch of base mix, then blending a portion at a time with frozen berries. Here is my favorite recipe.

  1. 1/2 cup plain kefir (Green Valley Organics & Helios are excellent)

  2. squeeze of fresh lime juice

  3. 30 grams plain whey powder (non-denatured whey and whey concentrate are healthier than whey isolate)

  4. 2 Tbs. raw, extra virgin coconut oil

  5. 2 slices frozen banana

  6. 1 cup frozen strawberries

  7. optional: unsweetened cocoa nibs/cashew pieces/shredded coconut

Blend kefir, lime juice and whey powder until incorporated, then add coconut oil. Blend in frozen fruit. Add a little water as needed to thin the consistency or if blender gets sluggish. Substitute whatever ingredients you want, like vegan protein for whey protein or blueberries for strawberries. Eliminate the lime juice if you prefer more sweetness and add optional ingredients at the end for crunch.

I quadruple the base mix (ingredients 1-4) and refrigerate it in a glass Mason jar. When I want a smoothie I blend the base mix with frozen fruit and voila! Delicious, nutritious, satisfying and simple.
